Natural Gas vs Propane Grills — Which Should You Buy?

NG vs LP Grills

The choice that affects install cost, ongoing cost, and how often you have to swap a tank. Here's what actually matters.

Short answer: If your house has natural gas service, run NG. You'll never run out mid-cook, the ongoing cost is lower, and built-in installs are cleaner. Go LP only if you don't have NG service or the grill is freestanding/portable.

The Real Differences

Install Cost

NG requires a licensed plumber to run a gas line from your meter to the grill location. Cost: $500–$3,500 depending on distance and code requirements. One-time. LP needs only a tank and regulator. Zero install cost. But you'll spend $20–$30 per refill every 10–20 cooks.

Ongoing Cost

NG is dramatically cheaper per BTU. A 4-hour NG cook session costs about $0.50–$1.50 in fuel. The same cook on LP runs $3–$5. Over a 10-year ownership, NG can save you $1,000–$2,500.

Run Time

NG is continuous — you never run out. LP runs ~10–20 cooks per 20 lb tank depending on burner count and heat level. Always keep a spare tank.

Heat Output

Identical BTU output if the grill is designed for both fuels. The only practical difference is air pressure tuning at the burner. Quality grills (Summerset, Cal Flame, etc.) sell separate NG and LP versions with the correct burner orifices for each fuel.

Conversion

Most premium grills cannot be converted between NG and LP after purchase. Don't buy an LP grill thinking you'll convert it later if you add NG service. Buy the right fuel up front.

When NG Wins

  • You have natural gas service to your house
  • The grill is a permanent built-in install
  • You cook 2+ times per week
  • You hate running out mid-cook
  • You want the lowest 10-year ownership cost

When LP Wins

  • Your house has no natural gas service (electric/oil heat)
  • The grill is freestanding/portable
  • You're a renter or moving soon
  • You can't afford the NG install upfront
  • You only cook occasionally (a few times a month)

The Mistake to Avoid

Don't buy a propane built-in grill for a permanent island install just to skip the NG plumbing cost. Three years of LP refills will cost more than the NG line would have. Plus, tank-swap interruptions during dinner parties are a real annoyance.
