Cal Flame Patio vs Escape vs Platinum: BBQ Island Series Comparison Guide
Cal Flame BBQ Island Series Comparison
Cal Flame makes three BBQ island series: Patio, Escape, and Platinum. They look similar in catalog photos. They're not.
This is the breakdown we give customers when they email us asking which one to buy. By the end you'll know which series fits your patio, your cooking style, and your budget.
Patio Series · $3,800–$4,400
Compact 6–7 ft islands, real built-in setup without overspending.
Best for: Smaller patios, first-time outdoor kitchen buyers, or anyone who wants a real built-in setup without overspending. Models: Maui Q, Kauai Q, Kona Q.
- 3-burner G3 LP grill standard (15,000 BTU each)
- Porcelain tile countertop
- Standard stucco trowel finish base
- 18" vertical access door
- Interior electrical
The honest take: The Patio Series is where most buyers land. It's complete — you're not buying a starter kit you'll outgrow. The 3-burner G3 grill cooks great for a family of 4–6. The only real limitation is upgrade ceiling: you can swap in a 4-burner G4 or P4, but the island won't accommodate side burners or refrigerators.
Escape Series · $4,500–$5,800
73–95 in mid-tier islands with the full accessory ecosystem.
Best for: Mid-to-large patios, regular entertainers, anyone who plans to add a side burner, refrigerator, or wine fridge over time. Models: Costa Q, Tropical Q, Pacifica Q, Baja Q (73–83"), Atlantic Q, Avalon Q, Bel Air Q, Malibu Q (95").
What you get over Patio Series:
- 4-burner G4 LP grill standard — a real upgrade in cooking surface
- 27" horizontal access door (bigger storage)
- Optional Premium Ameristone stucco finish
- Granite top option on Costa Q and Tropical Q
- Slot for side burner, refrigerator, ice bucket, cocktail center
- Optional Top Gun 5-burner convection grill upgrade
The honest take: The Escape Series is the best value tier in the entire Cal Flame lineup. You get most of what the Platinum Series has — same accessory compatibility, same upgrade options — at 30–40% less. The L-shaped Avalon Q and Malibu Q are particularly strong picks for corner patio installations.
Platinum Series · $7,500–$11,500+
Flagship 111–190 in L-shapes with the P4 grill included.
Best for: Serious entertainers, dream backyards, builders specifying full outdoor kitchens, anyone who wants the absolute best. Models: La Jolla Q, Carmel Q, Laguna Q.
What you get over Escape Series:
- 4-burner P4 LP grill standard — cast stainless burners with lights, rotisserie, back burner, smoker box, griddle tray included
- 30" double access doors standard
- Larger islands (111–190" wide)
- Multi-piece configurations (Carmel Q is a 2-piece, Laguna Q is a 3-piece L-shape)
- Premium tile and stone options included or heavily discounted
The honest take: Platinum is for buyers who already know what they want. The P4 grill alone is a $1,700 upgrade if you bought it separately, so the value math actually works — you're not paying double for marginal gain. The Laguna Q (190" 3-piece L-shape) is genuinely a complete outdoor kitchen, no compromises.
The Decision Matrix
How we'd frame the choice.
- Patio under 150 sq ft, budget under $5K: Cal Flame Maui Q or Kona Q (Patio Series).

- Patio 300+ sq ft, budget $5–8K, want L-shape: Cal Flame Avalon Q or Malibu Q (Escape Series).
- Premium build, budget $8K+: Cal Flame La Jolla Q (Platinum Series — best value entry to Platinum).
- Dream backyard, budget $11K+: Cal Flame Carmel Q or Laguna Q.

One Note on Pricing
Cal Flame enforces strict authorized-dealer pricing through their MAP policy. Every legitimate dealer charges the same price for the same product. If you find a price online that's 25–30% lower, you're almost certainly looking at a gray-market seller — they'll ship you a real Cal Flame product, but warranty claims and replacement parts become a nightmare. Verify our dealer status.
Upscale Home HQ is an authorized Cal Flame dealer. All advertised pricing complies with manufacturer MAP policy. Free LTL freight to the continental U.S.
