Every patio furniture conversation I have eventually lands on the same question, asked three different ways: teak or aluminum?

People think they're asking about looks. They're not. They're asking about weight, maintenance, how the thing behaves in November, and whether it's still going to look expensive in year six. Those are four different answers, and the sales copy on most sites won't give you any of them.

Harmonia Living is useful here because they build the same category of furniture in all three materials — solid teak, powder-coated aluminum, and rope-wrapped hybrids — at roughly the same quality level. Same money. Two and a half times the weight between the lightest and the heaviest. The Amadora is a better piece of furniture in a wind event and a worse piece of furniture if you have to carry it up a flight of stairs or drag it into a garage every October. The Alto is the opposite. Neither is wrong — but if you buy the 120 lb sofa for a third-floor terrace with no elevator, you bought the wrong sofa, and no amount of Sunbrella fixes that.

Also note the Amadora is the shortest of the three at 77.5" wide while being the heaviest. Density, not size. That's what Grade A teak plus 316 stainless hardware does.

"Aluminum patio furniture" still carries a mental image from twenty years ago — hollow tubing, plastic webbing, blows over in a breeze. That's not what this is. Harmonia's Avion line is thick-gauge powder-coated aluminum, rust-proof, and rated for both residential and commercial use. Commercial rating matters more than most spec sheets let on: it means the frame was built to survive a restaurant patio, not a homeowner who uses it eleven weekends a year.

One detail on the Avion sets I'd flag because it saves service calls: adjustable plastic leveling feet. Sounds like nothing. On a poured patio with any slope — and almost every patio has slope, because it's supposed to drain — a sectional that can't level is a sectional that rocks. Every module in a curve sectional has to sit flat or the whole arc reads crooked.

Teak is the only material in this comparison that improves with neglect, and it's the only one where you have to make a philosophical decision at purchase: do you oil it, or do you let it silver?

Both are correct. Oiling keeps the honey-brown color and is an annual chore. Letting it weather to silver-gray takes roughly a season, costs nothing, and is what most high-end installations actually do. What you cannot do is oil it for two years, stop, and expect it to look uniform. Decide once.

Look at the Milos dimensions against the others: 39" deep and only 26" tall. That's a low, deep lounge silhouette — genuinely different furniture from the 33–34" tall sofas above it, not a price upgrade of the same thing. If your patio is a conversation pit rather than a dining-adjacent seating area, that's the geometry you want. If you have older parents who'll be getting in and out of it, it isn't.

The other teak detail worth your attention: 316 stainless steel hardware on the Amadora and Milos. Not 304 — 316. In a coastal or pool-deck environment that's the difference between hardware that stays clean and hardware that weeps rust stains down your teak in year three.

Braided Olefin rope shows up two ways in this lineup. On the Alto it's the armrests over a fully-welded powder-coated aluminum frame. On the Amadora and Milos it's woven against teak.

The aesthetic reason is obvious. The practical reason is heat. A dark powder-coated aluminum armrest in direct August sun will make you flinch. Rope won't. If your seating area faces west with no shade, that's not a minor detail — it's whether the furniture gets used between two and six p.m.

The honest version

The number you'll see quoted across this category is 5 years. That is a fabric fade warranty. It covers the cushion fabric losing color. It is not a frame warranty, it is not a structural warranty, and anyone implying otherwise is selling you a feeling.

What is consistent and verified across the line: American-made cushions, 4.5" CertiPUR-US foam with a 1" quick-dry Dacron wrap top and bottom, machine-washable covers with YKK zippers, and Sunbrella performance fabric. The cushion construction is genuinely the same good spec from the $1,399 club chair to the $14,453 sectional. That's unusual, and it's the main reason I'm comfortable pointing people at the entry-level pieces without a caveat.

Harmonia ships from bi-coastal warehouses — California and Pennsylvania — and routes your order from whichever one serves your ZIP. Curbside LTL freight is quoted at checkout based on your delivery ZIP, and white glove is available as an upgrade. Two freight rules regardless of when you order, and they're not negotiable: inspect before you sign, and note any visible damage on the BOL. Freight shipments are not returnable once accepted.
